These number 8 tracing worksheets are for preschool and kindergarten children who are just beginning to recognize and write the number eight. The set includes ten printable worksheets for home or classroom use.
Along the way, they learn that eight means eight objects, practice tracing and writing both 8 and the word eight, and finish with a mixed review.
When children practise eight, begin by counting eight objects together, such as eight crayons, eight buttons, or eight fingers and thumbs held up as a pair of hands. Then show how 8 is made of two stacked loops, and let them trace the top loop first before following it around the bottom loop.
These number 8 tracing worksheets work best when tracing stays linked to counting, so ask children to count each group aloud before they trace the matching 8. If the loops close unevenly, praise the attempt, point to the loop that closed neatly, and try again on the next row. In these number 8 tracing worksheets, steady counting, careful tracing, and writing the word eight together build recognition that lasts.

How to Use These Number 8 Tracing Worksheets
- Start with coloring and finding eight, so children learn to recognize the numeral before they trace it.
- Follow the starting dot and arrows on the guided pages, and talk about what eight means: eight objects to count.
- Use counting and matching to check that eight means eight objects, then move to independent writing only after the guided tracing feels comfortable, and finish with the mixed review.
- Keep sessions short and print on A4 paper at Actual Size 100%.
- For repeated practice, print extra copies, or slip a printed page into a clear sleeve and trace it with a dry-erase marker.
When an 8 comes out lopsided, check the loops before trying again: the top loop should be smaller than the bottom loop, and both loops should close. On the counting pages, have children point to each object as they count it, so the group they circle on Worksheet 6, or in section 2 of Worksheet 10, really holds eight objects before they trace the matching 8.
For a gentle way to build this habit, the NAEYC article Play Games, Learn Math! Exploring Numbers and Counting With Your Family suggests slowing down while counting so that no object is skipped or counted twice.
Common Core Connections
These number 8 tracing worksheets offer partial practice only with the numeral 8; they do not cover a full standard on their own. For kindergarten, two Common Core standards connect to the pages below, and preschool use is general early number practice with no assigned code.
K.CC.A.3 — Write numbers from 0 to 20. Represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0–20. This post practices only the numeral 8: recognizing and finding 8 in Worksheets 1, 2, and 10; tracing and writing 8 in Worksheets 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, and 10; and matching groups of eight objects to the written numeral 8 in Worksheets 5, 6, 7, 9, and 10. Worksheet 8, which traces the word eight, is not mapped to this standard.
K.CC.B.4.a — When counting objects, say the number names in the standard order, pairing each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object. This connects only to Worksheet 6 and Worksheet 10 (section 2), where children count the objects in each unlabeled group and circle the group or groups with eight objects.
