Number 9 Tracing Worksheets

Number 9 Tracing Worksheets cover — space-themed workbook cover with an astronaut fox and a numeral 9 space station.

These number 9 tracing worksheets are for preschool and kindergarten children who are just beginning to learn nine. Children color a large nine, find nines among other numerals, match nine objects, and trace and write the numeral 9 and the word nine.

Along the way, they practise counting and recognizing groups of nine — nine apples, nine stars, nine balls and nine balloons — before finishing with a mixed review. The set has ten printable worksheets for home or classroom use.

When children practise nine, start by counting nine objects together, such as nine beads, nine buttons, or nine fingers and thumbs with one hand held up twice in a game. Then show how 9 begins with a round loop at the top and finishes with a straight line down, and let them trace the loop first before they draw the line.

These number 9 tracing worksheets work well when counting comes first, so ask children to count each group aloud before they trace the matching 9. If the loop closes unevenly, praise the effort, point to the part that worked, and try again on the next row. In these number 9 tracing worksheets, counting nine, tracing the loop and line, and writing the word nine together build recognition that lasts.

How to Use These Number 9 Tracing Worksheets

  • Start with coloring and finding nine, so children learn to recognize the numeral before they trace it.
  • Follow the start point and arrows on the guided pages, and talk about what nine means: nine objects in a group, such as nine apples, nine stars, nine balls or nine balloons.
  • Use counting and matching to check that nine means nine objects, then move to independent writing only after the guided tracing feels comfortable, and finish with the mixed review page.
  • Keep sessions short and print on A4 paper at Actual Size 100%.
  • For repeated practice, print extra copies, or slip a printed page into a clear sleeve and trace it with a dry-erase marker.

For more on this counting idea, the NCTM article Counting with Muna describes how the last number word said in a count gives the total for the set.

Common Core Connections

These number 9 tracing worksheets offer partial practice only with the numeral 9; they do not cover a full standard on their own. For kindergarten, two Common Core standards connect to the pages below, and preschool use is general early number practice with no assigned code.

K.CC.A.3 — Write numbers from 0 to 20. Represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0–20. This post practices only the numeral 9: recognizing and finding 9 in Worksheets 1, 2, and 10; tracing and writing 9 in Worksheets 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, and 10; and matching groups of nine objects to the written numeral 9 in Worksheets 5, 6, 7, 9, and 10. Worksheet 8, which traces the word nine, is not mapped to this standard.

K.CC.B.4.a — When counting objects, say the number names in the standard order, pairing each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object. This connects only to Worksheet 6 and Worksheet 10 (section 2), where children count the objects in each unlabeled group and circle the group or groups with nine objects.
