Number 1 Tracing Worksheets

Number 1 Tracing Worksheets cover showing numeral one and worksheet previews.

Learning the number one is a first step into counting, and these number 1 tracing worksheets give preschool and kindergarten children a gentle way to take it. Across ten printable pages, children meet the numeral 1 and the word one through coloring, searching, tracing, counting, and writing, one small skill at a time.

The worksheets build in order: recognition comes first, then guided formation with a starting dot and a downward stroke, then the idea that one stands for a single object, and finally independent writing and a mixed review that brings everything together. Print the pages for home or classroom use, and work through them at a pace that keeps practice short and encouraging.

How to Use These Number 1 Tracing Worksheets

  • Start with coloring and finding one, so children learn to recognize the numeral before they trace it.
  • Follow the starting dot and down arrow on the guided pages, and talk about what one means: a single apple, a single star, and a single ball.
  • Move to independent writing only after the guided tracing feels comfortable, and finish with the mixed review page.
  • Keep sessions short and print on A4 paper at Actual Size 100%.
  • For repeated practice, print extra copies, or slip a printed page into a clear sleeve and trace it with a dry-erase marker.

When children count a small group, have them touch each item once and say one number name for each item, so every object is counted once. This one-to-one correspondence is described in NCTM’s Counting with Muna.

Common Core Connections

These number 1 tracing worksheets offer partial practice only with the numeral 1; they do not cover a full standard on their own. For kindergarten, two Common Core standards connect to the pages below, and preschool use is general early number practice with no assigned code.

K.CC.A.3 — “Write numbers from 0 to 20. Represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0-20 (with 0 representing a count of no objects)”: this post practices only the numeral 1. Worksheets 1, 2, and 10 focus on recognizing and finding 1; Worksheets 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, and 10 focus on tracing and writing 1; and Worksheets 5, 6, 7, 9, and 10 link 1 to a single object or a group with one object — one apple, one star, one ball, one balloon, or a group with one star or apple — showing that 1 represents one object. Worksheet 8, which focuses on writing the word one, is not mapped to this numeral standard.

K.CC.B.4.a — “When counting objects, say the number names in the standard order, pairing each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object”: Worksheet 6 and Worksheet 10 (section 2) ask children to circle the group with one object. Finding that group means counting the objects in each group (stars and apples in Worksheet 6; stars in Worksheet 10, section 2), pairing each object with one number name, so each object is counted once.
