These number 4 tracing worksheets are for preschool and kindergarten children who are just beginning to learn four. Children color a large four, find fours among other numerals, count groups of four objects, and trace and write the numeral 4 and the word four.
Along the way, they learn what four means — a group of four apples, stars, balls, or balloons — before finishing with a mixed review. The set has ten printable worksheets for home or classroom use.
Choose a Number to Practice
Worksheet 1: Color Four

Worksheet 3: Learn to Write Four

Guided numeral formation. Guided formation practice using a large dotted 4 with a starting dot and directional arrows, and a dotted word four on handwriting lines.
Worksheet 4: Trace Number Four

Numeral tracing and independent writing. Rows of dotted 4s for tracing, followed by space to write 4 independently.
Worksheet 5: Four Means Four

Four quantity and numeral tracing. Connects the numeral 4 with groups of four apples, stars, and balls, with numeral tracing and writing practice.
Worksheet 6: Find Four Objects

Counting and quantity discrimination. Children circle only the groups with four objects, then trace the numeral 4 and the word four.
Worksheet 7: 4 and four

Numeral and word tracing. Pairs the numeral 4 and the word four with four balloons, with tracing rows for both.
Worksheet 8: Trace the Word four

Number-word tracing and writing. Dotted word-four rows for tracing, followed by blank lines to write “four” independently.
Worksheet 9: Write Four Yourself

Independent numeral writing. One dotted 4 tracing prompt, then blank handwriting lines to write 4 by yourself, with four apples as a quantity reminder.

How to Use These Number 4 Tracing Worksheets
- Start with coloring and finding four, so children learn to recognize the numeral before they trace it.
- Follow the starting dot and arrows on the guided pages, and talk about what four means: groups of four apples, stars, balls, and balloons.
- Move to independent writing only after the guided tracing feels comfortable, and finish with the mixed review.
- Keep sessions short and print on A4 paper at Actual Size 100%.
- For repeated practice, print extra copies, or slip a printed page into a clear sleeve and trace it with a dry-erase marker.
- Teach four as a quantity to check, not just a shape to copy: on Worksheet 6, have children count each group aloud and circle only the groups with exactly four objects, then point to ‘4 = four’ and say the numeral and the word together, so the symbol is tied to a counted group.
For another way to build this habit, the NCTM article Counting Activities to Try with Primary Students describes counting collections, where children count how many items are in a collection and then record their count on paper to show how many there are.
Common Core Connections
These number 4 tracing worksheets offer partial practice only with the numeral 4; they do not cover a full standard on their own. For kindergarten, two Common Core standards connect to the pages below, and preschool use is general early number practice with no assigned code.
K.CC.A.3 — Write numbers from 0 to 20. Represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0–20. This post practices only the numeral 4. Recognition and finding connect to Worksheets 1, 2, and 10; tracing and writing 4 connect to Worksheets 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, and 10; and representing four objects with the written numeral 4 connects to Worksheets 5, 6, 7, 9, and 10. Worksheet 8, which traces the word four, is not mapped to this numeral standard.
K.CC.B.4.a — When counting objects, say the number names in the standard order, pairing each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object. This connects only to Worksheet 6 and Worksheet 10 (section 2), where children count the objects in each unlabeled group and circle the group with four objects.
